our approach

“We established Abhikram, meaning initiation in Sanskrit, an Architecture, Interiors, Conservation and Planning consultancy firm in 1979 on our return to India. Our observations on the state of architectural practice then led us to initiate and explore, design directions and processes, that make the built environment functionally, psychologically, environmentally and spiritually, more contextual, integrated and comfortable for its users.

The design approach of Abhikram is based on sustainable and traditional methods of construction, using local recyclable, low embodied energy materials with an aim to revive indigenous knowledge, skills, and arts and crafts, to bring it into mainstream. In 2001, after 23 years in initiating directions, approaches and processes Abhikram made room for Panika. Panika, which translates to “dissemination” in Sanskrit, is a consultancy firm focused on spreading Abhikram’s expertise and knowledge in the field. Panika works on the grounds where the projects attempt to re-establish the relevance of traditional decision-making processes in contemporary context and aim to conserve energy through Passive Human Comfort Systems.

Abhikram established Virasat foundation for research in the use of traditional knowledge, materials and technologies, and Kanineeka Foundation to contribute in the process of holistic living, education and alternative methods of teaching. Our 45 years of design practice is a pursuit for responsible architecture focusing on the conservation of resources and conservation of our built and cultural heritage.”
