our philosophy

धयेय dhyeya

Our Dhyeya (mission) is to explore the design directions, and processes, which make the built environment, functionally, psychologically, environmentally and spiritually, more contextual, integrated and comfortable for its users. Our design practice is a pursuit for responsible architecture focusing on the conservation of resources and conservation of our built and cultural heritage.

The 45 years of our journey has progressed as we had envisioned without compromising on the convictions and beliefs and the shared values which led us to establish Abhikram. The following set of convictions has guided us in our choices and the paths which we have consciously avoided:

  • Conservation of resources is the primary guideline for all our projects.
  • We design the buildings, which in their form, space and technology, reflect the continuity of the Indian traditions.
  • We contextualise the design in all its aspects to evolve responsible architecture.
  • We innovate responsibly in all our projects, since innovativeness for a developing society is a necessity, not a luxury.
  • We know that every problem, irrespective of its nature, magnitude or constraints, has an appropriate solution.
  • We also know that appropriate solutions will only come through clarity in the identification of the problems, the selection of appropriate tools and their judicious application.
  • Our design and construction processes offer opportunities for creative inputs at all levels for all involved.

Abhikram’s practice has been in pursuit for energy conservation through use of the Passive Human Comfort System, re-establishing relevance of use of traditional knowledge, wisdom, materials and technologies using local craftsperson. Through following the above doctrine, following strengths in our projects and consequently to its clients have been observed. We believe these strengths need to be enhanced, intensified, disseminated and proliferated in the coming years.

  • Our buildings adhere to the principles of sustainability, and are good value for money for our clients;
  • For the given brief, our buildings are more economical than most others
  • The end-users in our buildings do not complain that they cannot carry out the functions for which the buildings have been designed;
  • Our buildings are climate responsive and contextual. Consequently they are more comfortable in relation to other buildings around them;
  • They are an investment which bring in returns in the long run, and depending on the level of inputs required by the clients, end up paying for itself in the long run;
  • Our designs reflect the short and long term aspirations of our clients, rather than becoming the reflection of the personalities and style of ourselves;

We are also working towards a continuous exploration for evolving the language of Indian contemporary & contextual architecture.
