The Oberoi Udaivilas is an eco-sensitive, super luxury heritage resort on the banks of Lake Pichola, Udaipur. It comprises 90 rooms (including 85 standard guestrooms, 4 suites and 1 presidential suite) with a lobby, dining areas, a bar, conference and meeting rooms.
The design was a response to a harsh climate, undulating land and rocky soil conditions and so the single-storey structure rises with the slope of the land creating architecture congruent with the character of the historic skyline. The process involved design strategies that evolved as an assimilation of spaces of a traditional palace structure and complex defined by courtyards and intricate craftsmanship and complemented by creative but traditional landscaping that predominantly uses the local flora to enhance the rocky outcrops. In addition the design was guided by a commitment to maximize pollution control, minimize disturbance to existing trees, water treatment and disposal of used water norms.
The project, a recipient of close to 50 hospitality related international awards sets a responsible role model for new development in historic settlements that beautifully blends contemporary needs with the historic ambience set by the use of traditional materials, technologies and craftsmanship. It was instrumental in reviving many decorative traditional crafts of the Mewar region like gold-leaf work and thekri or mirror work, through employment generation for more than 300 craftspersons for over 3 years and showcases the richness and timelessness of these living traditions that need a desperate flip. Most importantly it shows the path to balance continuity with change such that it accommodates growth.
