Restoring Mewari palatial ambience through minimal intervention, conserving historic interiors, furnishings and craftsmanship while sensitively integrating contemporary needs and functions.

The restoration and refurbishment sought to recreate the historic palace ambience while ensuring continuity, authenticity and contemporary functionality, guided closely by Shriji Arvind Singhji Mewar. The approach emphasised minimum but appropriate intervention, treating the palace as a living source of knowledge and allowing experimentation, observation and learning to guide design decisions.

Having remained largely unrenovated for decades, the palace was addressed at every scale—from architectural finishes to furniture, lighting, textiles, paintings, artefacts and trophies. The original character was carefully retained while accommodating the present-day requirements of the owners and guests.

Existing features became important clues for the restoration. An original hand-painted rose trellis in pale green was conserved and inspired the room’s colour palette. Characteristic Mewar tones of pale green, pink and deep red were combined with Victorian furnishings and European architectural elements. Original doors, windows, lighting and furniture were restored, while new pieces and soft furnishings were sensitively matched to the historic interiors.

Plasterwork was repaired and selectively enhanced with colour and gold leaf. Chandeliers, mirrors, paintings, carpets and furniture dispersed throughout the Palace Complex were traced, restored, paired and repositioned appropriately. Even visually intrusive contemporary necessities were carefully integrated.

The refurbishment thus restored the layered grandeur of the palace while preserving its character as a living historic residence—balancing continuity, authenticity and contemporary use through restrained and informed intervention
